New York City Eats: Levain Bakery

Levain Bakery is a tiny bakery on the Upper West Side of New York and is famous for its cookies. The first time I walked by their tiny below-street-level location, there was a line out the door and around the corner. Since I was on my way to meet the rest of our group, I didn’t have time to wait in line. However, on my last day in the city, I went by Levain Bakery at 8:30 am and only had to stand in a short line of four people for my cookie fix.

The cookies are $4.00 a pop, which sounds expensive until you see them. They are massive! Each cookie looks like it was made with a cup of cookie dough! I weighed one and it came to 175 g (about 6 ounces). So don’t try and eat a whole cookie all at once or by yourself.

I ordered a walnut chocolate chip, a dark chocolate chocolate chip, and a dark chocolate peanut butter cup cookie. The cookies have a crisp outside but are dense and fudgy on the inside, just take a look at the cross-section in the cookies above! The chocolate cookies were extremely chocolatey, and I liked how the peanut butter chips added a savoury touch that nicely complemented the chocolate dough.

I also ordered a small plain brioche and a small hot chocolate. I wasn’t planning on the hot chocolate, but the woman in front of me ordered one and I saw that they scooped chopped chocolate pieces into a cup of steaming hot milk, and I had to try one for myself.

Levain Bakery also bakes beautiful loaves of bread, including baguettes and ciabattas. Since it was my last morning in New York, I sadly had to pass on the bread, but I will return on my next trip!
