DIY: Crochet Cable Beret Free Pattern

I crocheted this cable beret for Tomiko using turquoise 100% wool. I have a wool felt turquoise beret from Lilliput Hats, a traditional millinery here in Toronto. Tomiko ‘borrowed’ that hat for a while this winter, and I only got it back after I promised to crochet a similar hat for her.

The free pattern works up quickly with less than a skein of medium weight DK yarn. The hat uses front post double crochet stitch to create the cables, interspersed in the increases and decreases of the double crochet stitches that shape the beret. I have a large noggin, so I made sure it was super tight for me in order for it to fit Tomiko’s head. If you’re making it for own head, you can alter the decreases in the row 18, and continue with that number of stitches in rows 19 and 20.

  15. Hi,
    Lovely beret, thanks for posting!
But, I am stuck! I’m at the end of row 4 with 45 stitches, and have tried row 5 several times, but how do you end up with 14 FPDC and 13 x 4 DC in between from 45 stitches? Wouldn’t that be 14 plus 13 x the 3 DC in between which aren’t on the same stitch as the FPDC, which adds up to 53 stitches?
Thanks in advance for any help 🙂
    Hetty

    1. We misplaced the beret, so as soon as we find it I will try to see if I can fix the instructions!

    2. Hi Hetty,
At row 5, I’ve got 14 FPDC, and 13×4 DC. The last and 14th ‘section’ in between the FPDC has a fifth DC that snuck in from the ch2 that started the row. Does that help? The total row has 71 stitches. Hope this helps!

    3. I have the same problem, instructions and counts don’t compute and around which stitch is the FPDC to be executed. Following the pattern as written, there are now 3 dc in the first stitch. Totally confusing!

      1. Hi! The FPdc in row 5 should be in the first stitch after the ch 2, so that there is only one dc and the FPdc in that stitch. Hope this helps 🙂

  20. Sorry I can’t figure out row 5 either. At the end of row 4 I have 48 stitches, and when I finish row 5 I only have 12 ‘cables’, with 4 dc in between. How do you get from only 48 sets to 16 cables?
I know it’s a few years since this pattern was posted, but I’ve only just discovered it.
I’d be interested to know if Hetty managed to figure it out and actually complete this!

    1. Sorry it’s taking me so long to reply (busy with work!). I’ll take a look and see if I can clarify (or fix!).

    2. I am having the same problem as Anne. Row 5 does not come out to 16 cables as it is written. Something is missing.

      1. Sorry, I should have written this more clearly. You do the FPdc then a dc in the same stitch. This creates 2 stitches where one used to be. Then you dc in the next 3 dc. Then this is where I think it wasn’t clear: FPDC in the last of the 3 DC and continue. This creates a FPdc with 4 dcs in between them. Please let me know if this fixes the problem!

        1. Yes this works. You work the FPdc, then into the same SPACE as the FPdc, you do one more dc. The first of the 3 next dc is worked into the very squashed stitch next to the last dc.
          Thanks

          1. Excellent! Thanks for pointing out the error. I’ve edited the pattern with the new instructions.

    3. Sorry, I should have written this more clearly. You do the FPdc then a dc in the same stitch. This creates 2 stitches where one used to be. Then you dc in the next 3 dc. 21. Thanks, I’ll try that – busy with work right now, too. But sounds like it will work. ?

  22. Just want to thank you for this pattern! I’ve been making red berets for people in the US in support of Medicare for All. Been using both of your patterns for berets, though changed it up a bit for sizing – but I’ve been a crocheter for 40+ years.

    Thanks again!

    1. I’m glad to hear our pattern is being used for such a good cause!

  23. I foumd your pattern for the Cable crochet beret on Pinterest and am making it now. Thank you! But Row 15 is MISSING in the instructions ! Can you help? I am already at row 11. Thanks…

    1. Thanks for pointing that out! It must have gotten deleted accidentally. I’ve added it back in so you can continue!

  24. Absolutely impossible. Executing this pattern as written either requires ignoring stitches or adding stitches where there are none. The very first stitch of row 5 has 3 dc, counting the chain 2 as a dc, the fpdc and another dc in the same stitch. Then, at the end of row 5, there’s an extra stitch, if ignored, the same ch2 counted as a dc at the beginning of the row makes 5 dc in the last set between fpdc.
