Trifle is such an easy dessert that I can’t really take credit for a recipe. So, this is the collection of ingredients that we had on hand: chocolate pound cake, vanilla custard, vanilla whipped cream, whipped cream-flavoured vodka, and wild blueberries. All of these ingredients are tasty on their own, but together they nicely complement each other. Trifle is one of those ‘show off’ desserts, desserts that are really easy to put together but taste amazing and impress almost anyone. Whenever I serve trifle at a dinner or party, it always gets rave reviews. Great praise for such a simple thing!

I threw this together as dessert for our Christmas dinner. If you can, try to make it at least a few hours before you are ready to serve it to let the cake soak up the fruit juices and alcohol.

If you want to switch up the flavours, you can vary the fruit (raspberries, strawberries, mangoes), vary the flavour of custard (chocolate, cinnamon, lemon), and use angel food cake or vanilla cake instead of the chocolate. You can also vary the type of alcohol, from sherry, rum, other types of flavoured vodka, or brandy.
