The Evergreen Brickworks is this amazing complex in the Don Valley. It’s called the Brickworks because, well, it was the brickworks of Toronto. Our dad is pretty sure that our 100-year-old house was made with bricks from the Brickworks. It has long since been closed as a factory, but was left derelict and forgotten for many years. Karlos said that some of his friends would go to raves there.

The quarry was overgrown with trees and native plants, and there are now a few ponds there (housing painted turtles and even a snapping turtle!).

The buildings have been restored to house Evergreen, an environmentally-focused non-profit. There is a shop and garden centre on-site, as well as an amazing restaurant Cafe Belong, and open warehouses. Ryan and I went to Toronto Underground Market (TUM) twice.

Every Saturday there is a great farmers’ market. I will often bike down there. In according with their environmental focus, it seems like there are just as many bicycle parking spots as car parking spots. There are plenty of farmers’ stalls and places to eat as well. On the particular day that I visited in July, there were Ontario cherries, garlic scapes, fresh herbs, new potatoes, fresh breads, strawberries, and rhubarb.
