I met a friend from high school when she and her baby were visiting from Montreal. We had brunch at Whippoorwill Restaurant and Tavern, which is at Bloor and Lansdowne.

The restaurant was homey and rustic, with thick wooden slabs for tabletops and jars of flower on the tables. The menu had a selection of hearty but seasonal dishes, and though we were here for brunch, I’d love to come back and see what their dinner menu is like!

There were also a slew of tasty-sounding cocktails, most importantly the one called Martin Picard (the chef from Au Pied de Cochon in Montreal).

Since I’m vegetarian and my friend doesn’t eat pork, we declined any bacon and sausages. My friend had the pancakes with rhubarb compote, maple syrup and whipped cream. It was real whipped cream, and delicious, tangy Ontario rhubarb.

I had two poached eggs with nettle pesto, served on two flaky, crusty biscuits (instead of the usual English muffins), topped with fresh spring peas and hollandaise sauce. Simply delectable.

My friend and I were just there for brunch, but I’m sure their dinners are just as amazing, using seasonal ingredients and clever flavour combinations. Definitely one to try again!
