I made the pilgrimage to the Black Dog Tavern in Vineyard Haven, after reading about it in a few of Susan Branch’s books. It was the first year-round restaurant on the island, the brainchild of Captain Robert Douglas in 1971. The Black Dog has now become an empire, with gift shops, a bakery and cafe.
My dad and I shared a cup of the Quahog Clam Chowder. It was delicious and creamy, with a sprinkle of paprika and some croutons.
My mom had a beer.
Then she had the Garlic Crusted Codfish, served with wilted spinach and mashed potatoes.
My dad had the Clam Linguine, which was superb. It was tossed with chopped clams and topped with the local steamer clams.
I had the Portabella Napolean, a giant stack of portobella mushrooms, spinach, roasted red peppers and goat cheese with a port reduction. The port reduction added a delicious hint of sweetness to the whole shebang.
Everything was superb! And to top it all off, I got myself the Black Dog cookbook.
