Crispy-fried-tofu Kiku Corner

Tofu is healthy and delicious, but sometimes it can be difficult to find  a good recipe that doesn’t just drown it in sauce. Here’s a fast and easy way to add loads of flavour and texture!

Crispy Tofu

Ingredients
  • ⅓ cup panko (Japanese breadcrumbs)
  • 1 tsp each black and white sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder
  • ½ tbsp dried parsley
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 package (about 14 oz) soft tofu
  • 1 tsp veggie oil for frying
Instructions
  1. Heat oil in a frying pan on medium heat. A non-stick pan works best for this.
  2. Preheat your toaster oven to 400F (200C), or if you don't have one, your oven.
  3. Drain tofu and cut into one-inch by two-inch cubes.
  4. Mix the panko, sesame seeds, spices, herbs and salt in a small bowl. Delicately roll the tofu pieces in the spice mix and coat all sides.
  5. Heat oil in a frying pan on medium heat. A non-stick pan works best for this.
  6. Preheat your toaster oven to 400F (200C), or if you don't have one, your oven.
  7. Drain tofu and cut into one-inch by two-inch cubes.
  8. Mix the panko, sesame seeds, spices, herbs and salt in a small bowl. Delicately roll the tofu pieces in the spice mix and coat all sides.
  9. Place in the frying pan. Repeat with three more pieces of tofu, being sure not to crowd the pan. Fry for 5 minutes on all sides until crispy and golden.
  10. Take tofu out of frying pan and keep warm in the preheated toaster oven. Roll the next batch of tofu in the spice mix and place in the frying pan. Repeat with the rest of the tofu. any remaining spice mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for next time.
  11. Serve tofu with sweet chili sauce, some hot veggies, and fresh Japanese rice.
