Small Apartments: Meinhilde’s Before Bedroom

In April 2013, I moved into my own apartment. Through luck and the help of family, I was able to get this small apartment in a house over 100 years old, renovated.

The Bedroom

The bedroom in my apartment was an addition to the original house, and it is very long (17.5 ft) and narrow (7ft). The layout itself was awkward, since there is a door to the little porch on one narrow end, and the built-in closet on the other. This leaves the only space for the bed in the middle of the bloody room! Not optimal. Oh, and the walls were painted pepto-bismol-pink.

This is the view of the south wall of the bedroom. Fortunately the room is quite bright because it has the south-facing window, and an east-facing door and window. However, the room is only 7 feet wide.

Here we are in the process of ripping out the built-in closet. As you can see, the bed would have to be against the wall, between the closet and the porch door. This takes up so much floor space!

We ripped out the old carpet, which was probably over 20 years old.

  1. woah! That pink!

  2. Great post! My first apartment on my own was in a very old house! It comes with lots of work but totally worth it for all the charm in the end!

    1. For sure! I think it’s charming that most of the walls, floors and ceiling aren’t perfectly level. Though it makes hanging pictures level rather difficult!

  3. […] First, rest your eyes on the pinkness of the old bedroom. […]
